A full service communications project embracing Artificial Intelligence

The challenge

The National Consortium of Intelligent Medical Imaging is a £10 million Innovate-UK funded research programme based at the Big Data Institute, University of Oxford.

Its mission is to revolutionise healthcare through artificial intelligence (AI) and medical imaging – scanning techniques including MRI, PET-CT and Ultrasound. By combining AI algorithms with the latest medical imaging techniques, it’s possible for patients to be diagnosed with a range of conditions more quickly, and therefore receive treatment more quickly.

The programme is a collaboration of 12 NHS trusts, academics, patients, charities and 12 industry experts.

From NCIMI’s launch in 2019, the team led by Dr Claire Bloomfield and later Dr Mark Beggs, was looking for a full communications function. Rachel and Lyssa worked closely with the team for four years plus a network of brilliant creative suppliers to celebrates the key wins and milestones for the programme. The combination of future-thinking tech together with potential to really transform the lives of patients and healthcare professionals made NCIMI our flagship client over the past four years.

The solution

  • Establish a communications strategy with clearly defined objectives, stakeholders and tactics.
  • Develop initial web pages within University of Oxford’s Medical Sciences Division
  • Deliver a vibrant brand refresh (brand botox!) with the incredible One Ltd
  • Deliver an impactful website, again in collaboration with One Ltd (they really are one of a kind!)
  • Project specific PR campaign for the DEFEND endometriosis project
  • Rolling digital communications, based on a fortnightly sprint cycle: Social media, email marketing, case studies and storytelling all managed
  • An end of project impact report
  • A suite of stunning Impact case study videos

The results

  • Feedback from NCIMI’s Chief Technology Officer that communications made the NCIMI and the team look awesome!
  • We consistently grew NCIMI’s social media following with a highly targeted audience
  • We shared 88  stories that highlighted the amazing work being done 
  • NCIMI gained lots of news coverage, including from The BBC, Sky News, Radio 5 Live Live, BBC Radio 4, and The Guardian 
  • Produced a series of 7 video impact case studies highlight the achievements of specific AI projects 
  • Created a final Impact Report for NCIMI
